Facade issues caused by cavity wall tie rust are unfortunately common. However, European and Belgian regulations are clear (Eurocode 6): cavity wall ties must be made of stainless steel as a standard. AISI 316 stainless steel is required for coastal regions, while AISI 304 stainless steel is used for inland areas. Belgium is the only country in Europe where galvanized wall ties are still in use. This is only permitted with the explicit approval of the manufacturer and only if the ties contain at least 265 grams of zinc.
